Giuseppe De Santis directed the first major blockbuster of postwar Italy, chronicling the work of the mondine (female rice weeders) in the rice fields of Piedmont, screening for San Diego Italian Film Festival. Film manipulates a number of genres, from melodrama to gangster and successfully combines social protest and entertainment. In Italian with English subtitles.
