Originally used in Japan to secure objects carried by Japanese gentlemen to their obi (sash), netsuke became a way to show a man?s taste and wealth as the merchant class prospered in the 18th century. Marsha Vargas Handley, International Netsuke Society President, gives a brief history of netsuke and sagemono.
