A Sanskrit term, rasa is variously translated as ?essence,? ?nectar,? or ?aesthetic sentiment.? It refers to a uniquely blissful experience evoked by a work of art in the connoisseur akin to spiritual realization. In an illustrated talk, Dr. Lance Nelson, professor and specialist in medieval Hindu theology at the University of San Diego, will discuss the evolution of this concept, from Bharata, the legendary father of Sanskrit dramaturgy, through Abhinavagupta, the great Kashmiri polymath who gave this concept its fullest elaboration.
