Looking at the current group of Mingei potters from Mashiko and other regions, Yellin will highlight how these artists have expanded the concept of mingei, yet continue to create functional and beautiful objects for use in daily life.

In conjunction with the Museum?s exhibition Nature Tradition and Innovation - Contemporary Japanese Ceramics from the Collection of Gordon Brodfuehrer.

Guest : Robert Yellin : He writes and speaks regularly on Japanese ceramics. For ten years he wrote columns for Japan Times, the largest English newspaper in Japan, in addition to contributing to other publications, such as Asian Art Newspaper. Yellin currently writes for Daruma Magazine and is the author of Yakimono Sanka published by Kogei Shuppan, a book (in Japanese) about sake utensils that was recommended by the Japanese Library Association for inclusion in all public libraries.

No longer advance reservations are accepted for this program, however a limited number of spaces are still available. If you would like to attend, please come to the museum at 5pm and tickets will be sold on a first come.
