Opening Community Actors Theatre's 2012/2013 Season is, Tanya Fuad's "Newroz Piroz". Newroz is the Kurdish New Year and marks a time of music, dancing, colorful dress and festivity. But beyond the celebration, Newroz also represents Kurdish pride, solidarity and freedom, for the holiday was banned until 2005 in Turkey, along with several other measures to banish the Kurdish cultural identity. "Newroz Piroz" is based loosely on a real party from the author's personal experience. Tariq, a Kurd, is throwing a party for Newroz, but only two of his friends are Kurds, while the rest are Turkish and Armenians. The resulting celebration is a humorous yet complex look into the intricacies of friendship, politics and complexities of identity when cultures with long and often tragic interrelated histories come together and attempt to move beyond the past. When Kurds, Turks and Armenians venture to celebrate Newroz together, their divisive histories can not be over looked. In this almost comedy, we get a glimpse into the intricacies of friendship, culture, politics and complexities of identity.
