Stage: Les Miserables

California Youth Conservancy presents one of the best-loved musicals of all time.

Les Miserables is considered by many to be one of the best works of fiction of all time. It has been commented that a person who has read the unabridged version has a deeper understanding of 19th Century France than he would if he had studied the subject for two years in college. Whether true or not, it is difficult to finish the novel and not be forever affected by the story. Hugo's novel is ripe with tragedy and misery--yet at the same time illuminates that most secret, basic goodness in people that is the saving grace of humanity. This novel also reveals the monumental power of forgiveness to transform lives. The triumph of love over hate; good over evil; hope over despair and absolution over condemnation laces this tale of men at their worst with glimpses of mankind's beauty that are so salient that they may cause the reader to put down the book and notice--seemingly for the first time--some thing of beauty around him that has been there, unnoticed, for a long time. The title means, simply, "The Miserable Ones." This is an enigmatic misery, as it is often defined by love so profound that the characters die for it. Love as strong as that makes for good reading for anyone with the capacity to understand the words. It also makes for excellent theatre. This is the reason I am so excited about again bringing to life on the stage this defining story. - Shaun Evans, Event Website
