Ambassador (ret.) Reno Harnish, a San Diego World Affairs Council member, and Dr. Scott Sellars will speak on Climate Change and National Security: Science and Policy. They will discuss the physical risks and policy dilemmas caused by climate change developments, such as food / crop shortages and changes in weather patterns, which can be expected to seriously complicate international relations and affect foreign policies.
Ambassador Hamish founded and is the Director of the Center for Environment and National Security at the Scripps Institute of Oceanography.He is interested in management and leadership in foreign affairs and national security. Reno served as the U.S. Ambassador in Azerbaijan, the Chief of Mission in Kosovo and the Deputy Chief of Mission in Egypt. He was heavily engaged in conflict resolution, democratization and energy issues. Reno continues to work for the Department of State as a senior inspector and team leader in the Office of the Inspector General. He received the Presidential Meritorious Service Award twice and the Department of State Distinguished Service Award among other decorations.
Dr. Scott Sellars is currently a Postdoctoral Scholar in The Center for Western Weather and Water Extremes (CW3E) at the University of California, San Diego?s Scripps Institution of Oceanography. His team bridges the scientific disciplines of atmospheric science, hydrology, climate and computer science to create innovative solutions to address water and climate stresses that operational water resource managers, decision makers and planners face.
