Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
The San Diego International Fringe Festival is designed to provide a platform for artists while also helping the community as a whole?boosting arts and culture within the City of San Diego. The festival features artists from across the United States and around the world participate alongside home-grown talent, in art forms spanning theatre, buskers/street performers, cabaret, comedy, circus, dance, film, poetry, spoken word, puppetry, music, visual art, design & open to any other type of artsy-ness not listed. At this festival, the performing artists pay registration and production fees, but in turn artists receive the ticket proceeds from their shows.

Editor's note: Although the Fringe Festival is not specifically focused on multicultural performances, many of the performances include international artists, and embrace international styles, traditions and themes.

The festival is modeled on the Scottish Edinburgh Festival Fringe. The festival has its origins in theatrical performances that were held "on the fringe" of the inaugural Edinburgh International Festival (1947), which featured top level theatre, opera and dance performances. That first year 8 different theater groups showed up uninvited to showcase their work hoping to draw attendees from the higher-toned crowds. The Edinburgh Fringe Festival (a name it adopted over time) had no real formal organization until the Festival Fringe Society was formed in 1949. The festival organization primarily consisted of college students and volunteers until 1970 when the first paid administrator was hired. Over the years the Fringe Festival has grown to become the world's largest art festival. In 2012 the festival took place over the course of 25 days with nearly 3,000 individual shows (many of which had multiple performances making the total in the 10s of thousands) in 279 venues and drawing performers from 47 different countries.
