Obon originated in Japan around 500 years ago as an occasion to honor one?s ancestors by acknowledging their past actions which contributed to the lives we enjoy today.

In modern times, the Obon Festival is celebrated with musical performances, children?s crafts and games, memorial paper lantern-making, Japanese toys and crafts, and a variety of festival foods, snacks, and confections.

Bon Odori, a free evening of Japanese music and folk dance, continues at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion.
