Movie Night at Mingei: Giants and Toys

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
Pre-Movie Program (5:00 PM): The Southern California Kyudo Renmei will present a Kyudo Ceremony, the Japanese way of the bow. Kyudo is Japan?s oldest martial art and while it studies the use of bows and arrows, it is not merely archery. Kyudo?s goal from the outset is not simply to strike a target with an arrow, but to elevate the self through the act of shooting.

Film Synopsis (film begins at 6:00 PM): Giants and Toys (Yasuzo Masumura, 1958, 95 min.) A lighter, flicked and fired up with the kick of a gunshot, punctuates this Tashlin-esque tale of competing ad agencies outsmarting and out-sacrificing each other and leaving pin-ups and mad men in the dust.

The Mingei of Japanese Cinema
Immerse yourself in Japanese culture this summer by spending your Friday evenings at Mingei for films, performances and demonstrations in July and August.

In collaboration with Pacific Art Movement, Mingei will present a series of programs highlighting the art of everyday life as also the props of film art. They catch our eyes, they stir emotion, they mesmerize and hold secrets. The objects of Japanese cinema give life to stories as much as they fill out the mise-en-scene, and in this collection, including films from throughout Japanese film history, they are as memorable as the plots and characters.

Relax at the Museum while enjoying a beer or glass of wine, and discover new and familiar areas of Japanese culture to enjoy. Take in a different film and program each week. Arrive at 5:00 PM for a performance or demonstration, and stay for the film beginning at 6:00 PM.
