With all eyes set on the Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro this summer, what is going on in Brazil, away from all of the pageantry and decorum? On August 30th, The San Diego World Affairs Council is pleased to welcome Mr. Jamal Khokhar, former Canadian Ambassador to Brazil (2010-2015), who will present his assessment of the ongoing political crisis within the country. He plans to highlight the possible future implications for Brazil, as well as the geopolitical implications for its neighboring countries in South America.
Mr. Khokhar will additionally discuss the role of the Institute of the Americas, a non-profit, independent public policy institute, which has been at the forefront of U.S.-Latin American cooperation for over 30 years. The Institute of the Americas is committed to promoting economic development, social justice, and improving the quality of life in the countries throughout the Americas.
Jamal Khokhar is President and CEO of the Institute of the Americas. Previously, Mr. Jamal Khokhar was a career diplomat with Canada?s Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade. In August 2010, he was appointed Ambassador to Brazil, where he served until 2015. Early in his career, Amb. Khokhar served at the Canadian Embassy in Washington, D.C. Later on, he became Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Department of Foreign Affairs and International Trade, and Regional Director General for Latin America and the Caribbean at the Canadian International Development Agency. In 2006, he joined the Inter-American Development Bank as Chief of Staff to the President and later led the creation of the IDB?s Department of Outreach and Partnerships. Ambassador Khokhar studied at McGill University, University of Ottawa, and was a Fellow at Harvard University?s Weatherhead Center for International Affairs.
