North County Chapter presents Patricia Marquez (Ph.D.), Dean of the University of San Diego, School of Peace Studies. Dean Marquez will present, Peace through Commerce: From Inclusion to Post-Conflict Rebuilding. The role business can play in ?peace through commerce,? centers on transforming the socio-economic and cultural fabric of communities through market mechanisms. This talk will compare and contrast innovative models of peace through commerce, highlighting ways in which business and entrepreneurship can generate large-scale inclusion and social justice. For example, after the Spanish Civil War in the impoverished Basque region a Catholic priest developed the Mondragon Cooperative to help rebuild community and to overcome poverty. It succeeded and today has more than 75,000 employees. Can this model of post-conflict rebuilding be replicated in other parts of the world?
