41st Annual Concert of Philippine Music & Dance

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
The SAMAHAN Filipino American Performing Arts and Education Center, Inc. presents a two-hour program rich with traditional folk dances and adaptations of tribal rituals from different regions of the Philippines. All performances are accompanied with live music provided by SAMAHAN's string and gong music ensembles, namely the Rondalla and the Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble, respectively.

The concert repertoire is presented in diverse dance suites based on regional origin and historical influence, namely, the Rural, Maria Clara, Cordilleras and Mindanao. The elegantly romantic Spanish-influenced Maria Clara dances and the exhilarating dances of the country side or rural are artistically choreographed and performed with the lively music of the Samahan Rondalla. The rural suite features the ever-popular Binasuan which SAMAHAN dancers perform with skill and joy, the children's performance of Itik-Itik, and the creative version of Tinikling dance ending with a fast pace.

The SAMAHAN Pakaraguian Kulintang Ensemble is one of the very few ensembles in the U.S. that play the authentic music of the Maguindanao, Maranao, Tausog and Sama tribes of Mindanao. Accentuating the authenticity of the ethnic dance performances are the vividly colorful native attires obtained from these regions. The evolution of the Maranao tribe's Kasingkil or Singkil highlights the Mindanao Suite. The presentation is put together starting with a woman's solo or group dance of skills to a choreographed presentation based on a courtship of a princess and a prince.
