A man from the coast of the East China Sea entered the political arena in 1500. Graduating with the highest degree in the empire, he started out as a humble magistrate, yet soon proved himself to be hardworking and worthy. Promotion after promotion, he worked in different lines of jobs, and was appointed due to the outbreak of rebellions to become prefect in south China, where he outstandingly reconstructed the city's defense system and defeated the rebels. However, what should have been the highlight of his career became a blemish upon which he was impeached and thus caused him to resign. Was he innocent or was he corrupted? By uncovering his story, we are able to observe the life and career of Ming officials, the dynamics of mid-level government work, as well as a case analysis on urban development and its challenges in 16th century China.
