This lecture explores the role of craftsmen and workshops in giving shape to Christianity in the fourth and later centuries CE. Arts, especially representational arts, carried a certain magic, or efficacy, whether in protecting places or directing supernatural powers. After looking at the various dimensions of this efficacy Frankfurter turns to textile weavers and mortuary specialists as particular areas for the integration of Christianity in Egypt.
