The Jacobs Center for Neighborhood Innovation presents "Ordinary Magic," an original spoken word opera written by its artist-in-residence Gill Sotu.
The piece is directed by fellow acclaimed spoken word poet, recording artist and educator Ise M. Lyfe.
"Ordinary Magic" tells the story of an ambitious young drummer who is forced to choose between her family, helping her community, or following her dreams among protests and powerful men with their own agendas.
Wilimena "Billie" Payne wants to follow in her father's footsteps and be the drummer for the world famous Vanguard Lounge dubbed "The Apollo of the West." However, riots break out over the unsolved murder of a local televangelist's Caucasian daughter in the minority owned establishment, her community urges her continue her late mother's legacy of fearless activism to help save the historic venue.
