SACRA/PROFANA presents a meaningful concert in honor of Black History Month titled Voyage: The Slave Journey, an event that also features the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir San Diego.

Anchored by the San Diego Premiere of Anthony Davis' momentous a cappella work "Voyage Through Death to Life Upon These Shores," this program will touch on the legacy of slavery.

The first half of the concert will include Davis' virtuosic multi-movement choral work, which explores the slave narratives that helped shape this country's diverse voices with text based on the poem "Middle Passage" by Robert Hayden. This work has only had five performances putting SACRA/PROFANA in the elite company of some of the top choral ensembles in the country including Chanticleer, The Dale Warland Singers, and Musica Sacra.

For the second half of the program, the Martin Luther King Jr. Community Choir will tell the rest of the story from the slave trade up-to the modern era, including chances to join in the singing.

Each performance will be followed by an open discussion with the artists. Anthony Davis will be present at all performances.
