When the Mountains Tremble (1983): Filmed in 1982 at the height of the Guatemalan Army's repression against the Mayan indigenous people, When the Mountains Tremble describes the struggle of the largely Indian peasantry against a legacy of state and foreign oppression. Centered on the experiences of Nobel Peace Laureate Rigoberta Mench?, a Maya K?iche indigenous leader, the film knits a variety of forms? interviews, direct address, re-enactment, video transmission, and on the spot footage shot at great hazard? into a wide-ranging and remarkable cohesive epic canvas of the Guatemalan struggle.
Granito: How to Nail a Dictator (2011): In 1982, Guatemala was engulfed in an armed conflict during which a genocidal ?scorched earth? campaign by the military killed nearly 200,000 Maya people including 45,000 disappeared. Now, as if a watchful Maya god were weaving back together threads of a story unraveled by the passage of time, forgotten by most, the characters of this film become integral to the overarching narrative of wrongs done and justice sought that they have pieced together, each adding their granito, their tiny grain of sand, to the epic tale.
500 Years (2017): From a historic genocide trial to the overthrow of a president, 500 Years tells a sweeping story of mounting resistance played out in Guatemala?s recent history, through the actions and perspectives of the majority indigenous Mayan population, who now stand poised to reimagine their society.
Director Pamela Yates will do a Skype introduction preceding the screening of WHEN THE MOUNTAINS TREMBLE and will do a Skype Q&A following the screening of 500 YEARS. The Q&A will be moderated by Ramona L. P?rez, Ph.D., director of the Center of Latin American Studies at San Diego State University.
