The Republic of South Sudan achieved its independence from Sudan in 2011 following over 30 years of civil war. After a brief period of peace and prosperity, South Sudan slipped back into war in 2013, forcing more than 900,000 people to seek refuge in neighboring countries and leaving another 1.7 million people internally displaced. South Sudanese documentary filmmaker Alex Taban will discuss the country?s struggle for freedom, the promise of independence and the ongoing challenges of governance.
