| All Day | Exhibit: The Art of Fotoescultura Fotoescultura is a sculptural art form that combines photography, hand carving, and painting into dimensional portraiture. It emerged in Mexico City in the 1920s and 1930s, becoming a popular vernacular tradition among working- and middle-class Mexican families throughout central Mexico. These sculptural portraits were encased in semi-standardized ornately carved oval frames or Streamline Moderne rectangular frames, under beveled glass held in place by upholsterer’s tacks. This distinctive construction lent the objects a devotional, almost reliquary-like aura. The medium reached a peak of popularity in the 1940s and 1950s, when collectives of artisans in downtown Mexico City employed a division of labor production system and door-to-door canvassers to gather orders, to mass-produce custom fotoesculturas for clients seeking portraits of dignity, presence, and permanence. The form eventually reached the United States, where Mexican American families adopted it to memorialize loved ones, particularly those who had served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War. By the 1960s and 1970s, changing tastes and technologies slowed fotoescultura production. Today, surviving fotoesculturas are poignant reminders of the remarkable inventiveness of popular visual culture in Mexico. For modern-day observers, fotoesculturas offer a window into the fashions and visual aspirations of mid-20th-century Mexicans, as artisans often subtly altered or enhanced the original photographs to reflect how the subjects, or their families, wished to be seen.

| All Day | Exhibit: Here, Now 여기, 지금 Here, Now 여기, 지금 presents publications and special materials on the Korean War (1950–1953) and the Korean Demilitarized Zone from historical and artistic perspectives. This exhibition invites reflection on the aftermath of the war and explores ways to promote peace in the present. At the end of World War II, Korea — unified for centuries — was liberated from Japanese rule but abruptly divided. The United States and the Soviet Union, concerned about Korea’s postwar influence, agreed to split Korea along the 38th parallel latitude line: Soviet forces would accept the Japanese surrender north of the line, while U.S. troops would do so in the south. At the Moscow Conference in December 1945, the U.S., Soviet Union, United Kingdom, and China agreed to a five-year trusteeship over Korea with the intent of establishing a unified government. However, they could not agree on which Korean groups to consult. Consequently, the plan stalled. The U.S. brought the issue to the United Nations, and elections were proposed. However, the Soviet Union rejected the U.N.’s involvement, setting in motion divergent paths to power for the North and South. In August 1948, Syngman Rhee was elected as the president of the Republic of Korea (South), while Kim Il-sung became the supreme leader of the Democratic People’s Republic of Korea (North) in September. Tensions continued to escalate, leading to the Korean War on June 25, 1950. The U.S. and U.N. forces supported South Korea, while North Korea was backed by its communist allies. Three years later, on July 27, 1953, an armistice was signed by the representatives of the U.N. Command, the Korean People's Army, and the Chinese People's Volunteer Army. South Korea did not sign the agreement, and the countries remain in conflict. To this day, their peoples and cultures continue to be isolated from one another on either side of the Korean Demilitarized Zone.

| Film: Riefenstahl Filmmaker and Nazi propagandist Leni Riefenstahl is considered one of the most controversial women of the 20th century. Her films Triumph of the Will and Olympia are defined by their fascist aesthetics, perfectly-staged body worship, and the celebration of all that is “superior” and victorious, simultaneously projecting contempt for the imperfect and weak. But Riefenstahl – who first broke into the German film industry as an actress – spent decades after the war denying her association with Nazi ideology, and claiming ignorance of the Holocaust. How did she become the Reich’s preeminent filmmaker if she was just a hired hand? Riefenstahl examines this question using never-before-seen documents from Leni Riefenstahl’s estate, including private films, photos, recordings and letters, uncovering fragments of her biography and placing them in an extended historical context. People & Places of the US-Mexico War December 1846, the largest battle of the US-Mexico War in California occurred about 30 miles north of Old Town, in the San Pasqual Valley near today’s San Diego Zoo Safari Park. American and Mexican forces struggled for control of Alta California and the battle paved the way to the eventual Mexican surrender near Los Angeles, a month later. As part of the broader war from 1846 to 1848, the action near San Diego secured control of Upper California for the United States and ensured its inclusion as part of the land ceded to the United States by Mexico in 1848 under the terms of the Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo. 175 years ago, in 1850, California became the 31st state. David Miller received his PhD from the University of California, San Diego in 2007. His research focus is the social and cultural history of the nineteenth-century United States. David has been with USD since 2005, offering a range of upper and lower-division courses including The Civil War and Reconstruction, The Civil War and Reconstruction in Popular Culture, US Immigration History, California History, A History of Race and San Diego, US History to 1877, and Race and Ethnicity in the American Experience. Miller received the 2017 Faculty Award for Exceptional Teaching, the 2019 Center for Educational Excellence "Best Attendance" award, and in 2020 the Center for Catholic Thought and Culture travel grant to explore the history of immigration in San Francisco and New York City from a Catholic perspective. He is the History Department's internship program coordinator. David also serves as the co-editor of The Journal of San Diego History, a joint venture with the San Diego History Center, and can be found on any given day out and about exploring our city.

For newer members, this is a way to connect to and learn about the League. Our Speakers Bureau team has developed the “America\'s Immigration Challenges” talk to present to civic and community groups. It has background on our immigration system, facts about changes under the new administration and information about current litigation, potential policy directions and action steps. Our presenters, Gina Gianzero and Jane Andrews, are members of our Speakers Bureau. We will have some social time with cheese and crackers, snacks and light beverages. Parking is available underneath the library, and parking tickets can be stamped inside the library. This will be a great opportunity to meet other LWVSD members and leaders as well as to hear up to date information on immigration.

As a teenager, Bia left home with just her guitar and began traveling across Brazil, performing wherever she could—on streets, in cafés, and in any venue that welcomed her. Her music carried messages of love while boldly addressing feminism, racism, and homophobia, reaching anyone willing to listen. Her breakthrough came during a Sofar Sounds session, where she performed “Cota Não É Esmola.” The song went viral, amassing over 13 million views on YouTube. Since 2017, Bia has performed throughout Brazil and across Europe. A standout moment came in October 2022 at WOMEX in Lisbon, where her showcase was hailed as one of the festival’s best. It marked a turning point, allowing her message—sung entirely in Portuguese—to resonate with global audiences.
