What happens inside families when immigration policy changes the marriage market? This webinar examines South Korea’s 2008-10 reforms, which unexpectedly reduced foreign-bride inflows and tightened local marriage markets. Using administrative records, household surveys and divorce registries, Wookun Kim will present on the effects on marriage formation, women’s bargaining power and employment, children’s education spending, divorce, and spouses’ well-being. The discussion will highlight how immigration policy can have far-reaching consequences beyond migration and labor markets. Professor Hyelim Son of the University of Seoul will provide insightful feedback as our discussant.
