| 5:00 PM | Talk: Daily Life in Occupied France In the wake of her mother’s passing, Kitty Morse made a serendipitous discovery. In the attic of her Southern California home, she came across a little suitcase containing the journal of her great-grandfather Prosper Lévy-Neymarck documenting daily life in Occupied France. A recipe book written by her grandmother, Blanche, accompanied the journal. Tragically, Prosper and Blanche would fall victim to the Nazi genocide, but their writings survived and have now found a broader audience through the labors of their great-granddaughter. Both an invaluable primary source and a heartfelt homage to daily life in dark times, “Bitter Sweet: A Wartime Journal and Heirloom Recipes from Occupied France” (2023) reclaims their experiences and culinary acumen for posterity.

| Film: The King of Laughter Neapolitan theater for his cheeky alter egos, Scarpetta’s larger-than-life stage productions were matched only by his eccentric personal life. Composed of wives, partners, lovers, legitimate and illegitimate children (including a young Eduardo De Filippo, famed Neapolitan playwright), Scarpetta’s home situation resembled one of his comedies more than a traditional family. At the height of his popularity, the comedian risked everything by staging a parody of the great Italian poet, Gabriele D’Annunzio. Booed and hissed from the stage by younger rivals, Scarpetta was sued for plagiarism, leading to the first ever copyright lawsuit in Italy. Despite legal troubles and familial strife, Scarpetta fought not only for his craft but for his legacy as one of the great performers of Italian theater. The King of Laughter is an extraordinary movie by film and theater director Mario Martone, featuring Italian star Toni Servillo.

| Film and Panel Discussion: Terms and Conditions Kahlil Joseph is a Los Angeles–based filmmaker and visual artist whose work moves fluidly between cinema, contemporary art, and music. Known for his pioneering practice of “conceptual journalism,” he creates immersive, non-linear narratives that challenge traditional ideas of time, authorship, and the moving image. He is the creator of BLKNWS and the feature film BLKNWS: Terms & Conditions, which expands his exploration of Black cultural production, memory, and global exchange.
Joseph’s work has been exhibited at major institutions including the Venice Biennale, Tate Modern, and the New Museum. He co-founded the Underground Museum with his late brother, artist Noah Davis, as a space for radical community engagement with art. A partner in the editorial company Parallax, Joseph has also directed acclaimed short-form work across music and film. His practice continues to redefine the boundaries between art, media, and lived experience.

| Music: Bossa in Bloom Brazilian Jazz Night brings together a group of standout Southern California musicians for an evening celebrating the rhythm, warmth, and beauty of Brazil’s musical tradition. At the center is vocalist Lexi Pulido, whose expressive voice and natural feel for the music bring elegance and soul to classic bossa nova and samba repertoire. Leading the ensemble on drums, Matthew Elton Smith brings a deep sense of groove and musical direction to the group, blending jazz sensibility with the subtle pulse and flow of Brazilian rhythms. His playing helps guide the ensemble while leaving space for the kind of spontaneous interaction that makes live jazz exciting. The band also features vibraphonist Ian Harland, whose shimmering sound and melodic improvisations add a unique color to the group. Guitarist Aaron Lind provides the harmonic foundation with the smooth, rhythmic feel that is central to Brazilian music, while bassist Harley Magsino anchors everything with warm tone, lyrical lines, and an effortless pocket. Audiences will be treated to a rare and captivating performance of wayang kulit, Indonesia’s renowned shadow puppet theater. This ancient art form uses hand-carved leather puppets, accompanied by a traditional gamelan ensemble, to bring to life epic tales from the Ramayana and Mahabharata. In this special presentation, celebrated shadow puppet master (dhalang) Woro Mustiko Siwi—one of the few women in Indonesia to achieve national and international acclaim in this traditionally male-dominated art form—will lead a condensed one-hour performance, thoughtfully adapted from the full six- to eight-hour format. The story, rooted in Javanese culture yet rich in universal themes, will be performed in English for the first time by an Indonesian woman puppeteer.

A passionate beauty sways the hearts and political leanings of two men as Spain is torn between monarchy and revolution in Federico Moreno Torroba’s “Luisa Fernanda.” This fiery yet romantic drama is a great example of Zarzuela, a unique Spanish art form incorporating classical singing as well as spoken words to tell stories of the people. “Luisa Fernanda” was written in 1932, and it has been one of the most beloved Zarzuelas ever since. Cinballera Entertainment is honoring San Diego’s rich Hispanic history by performing this Zarzuela in concert at the beautiful Villa Montezuma. The production will be performed in costume and with as much staging as possible in the intimate setting of the Villa. Cinballera’s Season 3 finale also honors its founders’ operatic history. | Film: Vermiglio The lush and breathtaking beauty of the Alps, filmed with painterly grace under natural light from frigid winter to redemptive spring, provides the physical and emotional backdrop for Vermiglio, Maura Delpero’s visionary film, which won the Silver Lion at the 2024 Venice Film Festival. This singular portrait of a sprawling family, set in the small, mountainous village of Vermiglio during the waning days of WWII, follows a series of dramatic, consequential events after the arrival of a taciturn Sicilian soldier, who hides out in town after deserting the army.
While there, the soldier develops a romance with the family’s eldest daughter, Lucia. Vermiglio shows the lives of a provincial family in a remote village suspended in time by the customs of a fading era. Conjuring stories from her own family’s past, Delpero creates a deeply personal and human tale that recalls the great neorealist movement in Italian cinema, but through Lucia’s perspective Vermiglio feels distinct and novel. Known for its unique visual style, dark humor, and anti-totalitarian themes, the film is a satirical look at a futuristic society choked by red tape, featuring a cast that includes Robert De Niro, Kim Greist, and Michael Palin. Brazil is a film that takes you for a wild ride intellectually, culturally, spiritually, morally, aesthetically. Brazil comments on a specific time, and all times. It is cinema at its most enthralling and simultaneously at its most revelatory. The cinematography, score, locations, set design, and flights of fancy combine to generate a cult classic. For our purposes, this provocative production points it blinding light on the authoritarian/totalitarian menace then and now. Enjoyable in a resistance act of critiquing the enslaving system.

| Music: Sonido De La Frontera Sonido De La Frontera is the combination of Soundsystem culture, hip hop production aesthetic, and the sounds of Latin America’s most prolific dance music: Cumbia. The result is a bass oriented, dance driven music with a sound unique to the border between San Diego, California and Tijuana, Mexico. This trio is made up of Karlos Paez, Mr. Henshaw, and DJ Unite. Karlos Paez is an energetic frontman, also known for his role as vocalist for San Diego’s premiere Latin Music project, The B-Side Players.
With his unique vocal styling and ability to deliver a magnetic performance, Karlos produces lyrics that seduce a dancer to cut loose, while inducing the spirit of both culture and rebellion. Mr. Henshaw is the producer for First Power Crew, and has produced many break records directed towards the avid turntablist. His sound is dark and heavy, with an emphasis on big drums and bass, as evident in his current projects Planet B and Satanic Planet. DJ Unite is a veteran DJ for Tribe of Kings Soundsystem as well as First Power Crew, who cut his teeth on dancefloors nationwide. Unite is well versed in keeping dances energetic, with a musical arsenal that spans for many genres. Sonido De La Frontera is a mixture of all the different sounds and culture found in the southernmost part of California, San Diego. It is cumbia music with a production approach similar to hip hop and electronic music.

A Billboard-charting pianist and composer, he has performed at UNESCO headquarters, large arenas, and royal halls for world leaders, including the late Queen Elizabeth II and President Nelson Mandela. His collaboration “Princess of the Night” with legendary pianist Richard Clayderman, his album Un Piano Y Amigos featuring Spain’s best selling artists including Ana Mena and India Martínez, and his work with London’s Royal Philharmonic Orchestra highlight his cross-genre artistry.

| 11:00 AM | Stage: Thinking Shakespeare Erna Finci Viterbi Artistic Director Barry Edelstein will offer an encore of his program Thinking Shakespeare Live!, a 90-minute exploration of the language of Shakespeare, on Saturday, May 30 at 11:00 a.m. Drawn from Edelstein’s approachable and inviting book Thinking Shakespeare: A How-To Guide for Student Actors, Directors, and Anyone Else Who Wants to Feel More Comfortable with the Bard, Thinking Shakespeare Live! will feature Edelstein, who will be joined by three professional classical actors. Immediately after the event, Edelstein will sign copies of Thinking Shakespeare, which will be available for purchase at the theatre.
This program is an ideal introduction to Shakespeare for families and young audiences, as well as an exciting new look at the playwright for Bardophiles. Edelstein has performed Thinking Shakespeare Live! across the country, including at the Folger Shakespeare Library in Washington, D.C. In addition to serving as Artistic Director at the Globe, Edelstein is a renowned stage director, producer, podcast host, and educator.
He has directed over half of the Bard’s plays. Edelstein’s Globe directing credits include this season’s hit, Henrik Ibsen’s Hedda Gabler, which starred Katie Holmes in the title role; What We Talk About When We Talk About Anne Frank; The Winter’s Tale, Othello; The Twenty-Seventh Man, the world premiere of Rain; Picasso at the Lapin Agile; Romeo and Juliet; and the world premiere adaptation of Henry 6, among others. He oversaw The Old Globe’s inaugural Classical Directing Fellowship program. Prior to joining the Globe, Edelstein was the Director of the Shakespeare initiative at The Public Theater (New York City), and the Artistic Director of Classic Stage Company (New York City).
He is also the creator and host of The Old Globe and Pushkin Industries’ podcast Where There’s a Will: Finding Shakespeare, an exploration of the many ways Shakespeare has made his way into unexpected corners of American life. His book Thinking Shakespeare is considered the standard text on American Shakespearean acting.

| Umeboshi Workshop In this two part hands-on workshop (separated by 1 month), you will learn to make umeboshi, traditionally cured Japanese pickled plums! Umeboshi (梅干) is salted Japanese pickled plums. Packed with umami, saltiness, and subtle floral aromas, these little morsels pack a mighty flavorful punch! In Part 1, we will start with fresh ume (plums) and prepare the jar for a month-long curing. In Part 2, we will separate the plums from the liquid (umeshu), dry them for a few days before jarring them up again for a longer cure. Includes your own take-home jar of umeboshi (ready next year) as well as samples of finished umeboshi.
