This talk focuses on coins and on lands, specifically the territory of modern Ukraine. Of particular interest are classical and hellenistic Greek coins moving across this region, especially in context of commerce between the Mediterranean and Pontic world of the Greeks and the Scythian world of the interior, north of the Black Sea. What do these coins tell us about life in antiquity or about the activities of states? What do they tell us about modernity, both vis-a-vis commerce (and sometimes crime) but also national heritage and preservation? Methodologically, I deal with the role of data and large-scale analysis in making this story graspable: What role does changing technology play in reconstructing this world?
