The relationship between declining rates of first marriage and Japan’s very low fertility is well documented and well understood. Less attention has been paid to broader patterns of family change and their implications for family structure and well-being. In addition to providing an update on patterns of first marriage, Jim Raymo will discuss research on divorce, single parenthood and remarriage in Japan. He will pay particular attention to levels, patterns and implications of these relatively understudied but increasingly common features of the family life course
