Highly exposed to classical music and opera by her grandfather, a clarinet player, she enriched her musical background with jazz by starting her formal training in Torino, Italy. Her ability to focus on various types of vocal styles inside the extremely diverse world of Vocal Jazz allowed her to capture elements of vocal technique from different sources of inspiration and at 17, she was selected as one of the winners of the “Giovani Proposte” of the Italian contest “Sanremo Giovani.”

He agrees in exchange for a unique painting that he wants for his collection. The arrival of the countess’ eccentric family turns his quiet life upside down. Silvana Mangano and Helmut Berger star alongside Burt Lancaster in the roles of Bianca and her young lover – central characters in this family possessing rather unusual moral values. In the film, the professor succumbs to the charms of Konrad Huebel, despite his vulgar nature. A strange relationship – based on desire and domination – comes to exist between them. For some, this fictitious couple is a metaphor for the relationship that was formed between Luchino Visconti and Helmut Berger.

| The Beginnings of the Buddha Image in India and Central Asia Images of the Buddha are among the most widely distributed religious representations. While the Buddha himself was South Asian, the origins of the image of the Buddha remain something of a paradox. The earliest descriptions of him were extraordinary, but Indian Buddhists curiously decided not to represent the Buddha as a human figure for some centuries, only denoting him by symbols. Around the beginning of the Common Era, two traditions of the Buddha image suddenly emerged, essentially fully developed from the schools of Mathurā in North India and of Gandhāra, bordering Central Asia. What had happened to make this dramatic change palatable to the Buddhist communities in India and Central Asia? We will look at images of the Buddha configured by Alexander the Great’s incursions, by image-driven forms of prevailing religion in India, temples to Central Asian kings, and North Indian spirit cults. Working through these influences—and more—the Buddhists managed to convey the Buddha’s sense of spirituality and interiority, spreading a legacy across Asia.

The participants will contextualize recent events in the longer historical process of U.S. empire in Latin America and discuss the causes, meanings, and effects of the resurgence of U.S. imperialist ambitions.

| Author Talk: Sujata Massey Warwick’s presents Sujata Massey as she discusses and signs her new book, The Star from Calcutta (Perveen Mistry #5). Sujata Massey was born in England to parents from India and Germany, grew up in St. Paul, Minnesota, and lives in Baltimore, Maryland. She was a features reporter for the Baltimore Evening Sun before becoming a full-time novelist. Berlin, 1942: it was the most beautiful summer for Hilde – madly in love with Hans and joyfully pregnant. But amid the passion there is grave danger. Hans becomes involved in the anti-Nazi resistance, with a group of young people who will later be called the “Red Orchestra”. Despite the huge risks, Hilde decides to get involved herself but is arrested by the Gestapo and gives birth to her son in prison. Now in a desperate situation, Hilde develops a quiet inspirational strength, but she only has a few months left with her son.
FROM HILDE, WITH LOVE is the eighth collaboration between director Andreas Dresen and screenwriter Laila Stieler. The film is based on the true story of Hilde and Hans Coppi, who were executed in Berlin-Plötzensee. Between 1942 and 1943, more than 50 members of the “Red Orchestra” resistance group were murdered. The film tells a nearly timeless and powerful love story — about decency and resistance, intuition and civil courage, dignity and fear.

| St. Patrick's Day Parade & Festival Come join us for a day filled with fun, music, and all things green! The festival will be held at Sixth Avenue & Laurel Street, where you can enjoy live performances, delicious food, and festive drinks. This year, we are celebrating "Irish Here, There, and Everywhere" as we recognize and honor Irish culture and heritage around the world and connecting with our wonderful San Diego communities. Attending the parade is free and fun for the whole family. It starts at 5th and Laurel, proceeds to Upas, crosses to 6th and down to Laurel where the festival area is located. Entry to the festival is $10 for 21 and up and free for under 21 and active duty military with i.d. Get your tickets for festival entry and while you are at it, some beer tickets at the same time (21 and up only, must show valid i.d. to collect tickets). Don't forget to wear your best green outfit and get ready to celebrate St. Patrick's Day in style. | Music: Oghlan Bakshi The Center for World Music presents Oghlan Bakshi in concert. Step into the ancient musical world of Turkmenistan with Mohammad Geldi Geldi Nejad, known by the honorific Oghlan Bakhshi, roughly translated as “prodigious child bard.” In this rare solo performance, he brings to life a centuries-old tradition of dutar (two-string lute) playing and bardic singing passed down through generations of nomadic storytellers. His strumming evokes the galloping rhythms of horses across the steppes, while his guttural vocal ornamentation conveys the full range of nomadic emotions—from love and longing to sorrow and heroic struggle.
