Hoping to bridge the gap between himself and his dying son Kenichi (Kiichi Nakai), who is a fan of Chinese folk music, Takata (Ken Takakura) travels across China's heartland to find famous opera singer Li Jiamin (playing himself) and videotape his performance of the legendary song, "Riding Alone for Thousands of Miles." As Takata begins his odyssey, he encounters strangers who color his journey and allow him to discover kindness and a sense of family he thought he had lost long ago.
