Guatemala! Celebrations of Weaving

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
Join San Diego Museum of Man to celebrate the beauty of woven garments made by women in Mayan villages in Guatemala. "Guatemala! Celebrations of Weaving" features weavings from the Museum of Man's rich collections, and includes garments made for daily wear and for ceremonial use. the weaver's hands have skillfully blended cotton, silk, and wool into clothing with designs inspired by both ancestors and surroundings. the garments are often particular to a village (many of which are remote and difficult to reach) and to the culture of the people who dwell there. the designs of the garments also reflect their use, and the exhibit will include musical instruments associated with the ceremonies and fiestas to which the clothing is worn. Marimbas, drums, rattle, oboes, and rasps--handmade from natural materials found in the villages--add their colorful design to this intriguing story of Guatemalan weaving. This event will be held from 10/13/06 ? 4/30/07.
