Writer/director Zhang Yimou's (Hero, House of Flying Daggers) colorful 10th century epic fuses high adventure and romantic intrigue with the best of contemporary martial arts. On the eve of the Chong Yang Festival, as golden flowers fill the Imperial Palace, betrayal, deceit and passion inform the volatile balance of power between Empress Phoenix (Gong Li), Emperor Ping (Chow Yun Fat) and his three sons (Jay Chou, Liu Ye, Junjie Qin). Amid the glamour and grandeur of the festival, ugly secrets are revealed, and as the Imperial Family continues its elaborate charade in a palatial setting, thousands of golden-armored warriors charge the palace.
