Purandara Dasa, also known as the Father of Carnatic Music is considered to be one of the greatest contirbutors to Classical Carnatic Music. His compositions are in praise of Lord Vishnu (quoted as Purandara Vittala in his compositions) and contain profuse philosophical observations about human nature and existence. Every year in large parts of southern India musicians and music lovers get together to sing his compositions as a tribute to this great composer. All of his compositions are in Kannada and are popular across different communities. Purandara Dasa is also believed to be a proponent of the Bhakti Movement, in India , which emphasizes devotion to God as the sole means of salvation.
