With a fifth album, El Primer Instinto, under its belt, Mexico City's Jaguares have secured a rep as south-of-the-border chart-toppers. While Instinto is a collection of acoustic treatments of the band's hits and a few covers, Jaguares more often resembles a guitar-based pop/rock act such as U2 or Def Leppard, albeit one that can take multiple stylistic turns in one song. El Primer Instinto is stripped-down, but Jaguares has been known to use heavy orchestration, add a goth tinge or Latin beats to its heartfelt guitar tunes. While Mexican rock comes no more slick and professional than this, Saul Hernandez' lyrics are known to touch on social and cultural issues. While the group sings in Spanish, the Jaguares pop sensibility is definitely Top 40 and tends to overcome the language barrier.
