Julian has a rich African American heritage. In 1869, Fred Coleman (African American) struck gold and soon thereafter, the town was founded. America Newton operated a laundry service. Albert and Margaret Robinson established the Robinson Hotel and restaurant. This is but an few examples of the town's black historical past. There's a lot more. Remember, experience, and celebrate Julian's African American history at the 2007 Julian Black History Month Festival.
