Padmshri Ramani is one of South India's top rated flautists. His early training in Karnatic music came from Sri Narayanaswamy Iyer. He studied later under the legendary T.R.Mahalingam, the flute genius popularly known as mali.

He was born in 1934 in Tiruvarur in Tamil Nadu, the birthplace of the Tyagaraja, Muttuswamy Dikshitar and Syama Sastri trinity. From early boyhood he studied with his grandfather A.N. Iyer and then T.R. Mahalingam, both respected flautists.

He gave his first concert at the age of 11. By the age of 12 he was accomplished enough to be performing on All India Radio.

He has occasionally duetted with the Hindustani flautist Hariprasad Chaurasia -- the first occasion was 1971. Other jugalbandis have included partnerships with the vocalists Balamurali Krishna and Pandit Jasraj, the violinist T.N. Krishnan and the sarodist Amjad Ali Khan.

Dr. N. Ramani was one of the first Carnatic musicians to come to wider, Western attention. His fame in India and overseas rests on the classical purity and vocal quality of his flute playing. Ramani is the south india's counter partner to the western top ranking exponents of the flute such as James Galway and Jean Pierre Ramphal.

He runs the Ramani's Academy where he handles classes for senior level students. Also he personally handles classes seasonally.
