As part of One Book, One San Diego, the Central Library presents Women of Islam: Veiling and Seclusion. Director Farheen Umar, travels throughout Pakistan, Iran, Turkey and the USA to talk with Muslim women and challenge the assumptions about the practice of wearing veils. This landmark documentary explores the origins of these stereotypes and confronts misconceptions about the tradition of covering in Muslim society.

Discussion Facilitated by Ghada Osman, Ph.D. Associate Professor, Department of Linguistics and Oriental Languages at San Diego State University. Ghada Osman earned a Doctor of Philosophy Middle Eastern Studies from Harvard University in June 2001. At SDSU, Ghada Osman teaches all levels of Arabic (Elementary through Advanced), as well as non-language courses such as Arabic Culture and History of the Islamic World.
