San Diegans have an opportunity to positively influence education on the other side of the world with the purchase of a $75 ticket to the La Jolla Golden Triangle Rotary Club?s annual fund-raising event, Cheers for Charity.
Some of the proceeds from the Mardi Gras-themed party on May 31 will benefit Rotary Hall, a dormitory for female students at the Nangarhar Univeristy in Afghanistan. Already under construction, the $250,000 dormitory will house up to 72 female students who will be able to continue their education at the university level. Many of the students will become teachers and go on to educate another generation of girls in Afghanistan.
?Once Afghan girls are in sixth grade or so, they must be taught by female teachers,? explained Steve Brown, a member of the LJGT Rotary club. ?The construction of this dormitory will allow more girls to continue their education and eventually become teachers. It is our hope that fewer Afghan girls will have to drop out of school due to a lack of female teachers.?
The 19th annual gala will include wine tasting, micro beer sampling, live and silent auctions, food and entertainment.
Ticket: $75
Location: La Jolla Marriott, 4240 La Jolla Village Drive, La Jolla
