"In San Diego for its exclusive west coast venue, Palekh: Icons to Souvenir Boxes to Icons, is a major exhibition of works steeped in the rich cultural tradition of the Russian village of Palekh, one of the great icon centers of the 18th and 19th centuries. The show displays traditional icons as well as the folk handicraft of decorated papier-mâché black lacquer boxes. The works are on loan from three organizations in Russia and are complemented by two Palekh icons from the Putnam Foundation collection."
