Ustad Shahid Parvez Khan belongs to an illustrious musical family and has achieved success in not only preserving tradition but has also pushed its boundaries to greater heights of aesthetic beauty.One of the most brilliant musical gems of the famous Etawah Gharana, Shahid Parvez Khan belongs to the seventh generation of his musical lineage. A very young Shahid Parvez was initiated into the hallowed realms of vocal music and tabla by his illustrious father and Guru, Ustad Aziz Khan, before training on the Sitar. He was recognized as a child prodigy and started performing in public at the age of 8. His mastery over vocal music and the 'Tantrakari Baaj' (instrumental technique) add a unique richness to his music. He is a top grade artist of All India Radio and has received many awards including the 'Sangeet Natak Academy Award', 'Sur Shringaar', 'Kumar Gandharva Samman', 'M.L. Koser Award' etc. His sparkling intellect and the highly charged sound quality conjured from his Sitar are the hallmarks of his improvisatory music.His dazzling virtuosity and innovative genius have earned him a legacy as a giant of the sitar.
Arijit Mahalanabis started training in Hindustani music in 1980 under the guidance of AIR Delhi vocalist Smt. Shahana Banerjee. After moving to the United States, he has received regular guidance from leading performers of many genres of Hindustani music. He is one of the few musicians who regularly perform Dhrupad, Khayal and Thumri. He has taught courses and given lectures at the University of Washington and Penn State University. Arijit has recently started aninstitution in Seattle called the Seattle Indian Music Academy (SIMA) which is dedicated to the teaching of Indian music.
