Balboa Park will be the setting for the second community "Diwali Festival". This colorful festival will feature arts, a cultural program and procession, music, dancing, Indian food, family activities and the traditional ceremonial lighting of lamps. The lamps were made in India and brought to San Diego for this special event. 1008 small lamps, arranged in graceful patterns, and 50 large brass lamps, some nearly five feet high, will be lighted at sunset by distinguished women from San Diego and the evening’s Guest of Honor, Ambassador Sushmita Thomas, Consul General of India, San Francisco.

Diwali is a public holiday in India and a significant festival for Hindus, Jains and Sikhs. Homes are decorated with lights; fireworks are displayed and sweets and gifts are given.
