Parol are traditional star-shaped lanterns of the Philippines. Every Christmas season, Filipino homes and buildings are adorned with these beautiful star lanterns. The earliest parols were made from simple materials like bamboo sticks, Japanese rice paper (known as "papel de Hapon"), crepe paper, and were illuminated with a candle or coconut oil-lamp. Present day parol are sometimes made of a variety of other materials such as cellophane, plastic, rope, and capiz shells. Parol symbolize the Star of Bethlehem that guided the Magi in the nativity story. Parols are to Filipinos as Christmas trees are to many Westerners - an iconic and beloved symbol of the holiday. Refreshments will be served.
