Persian Music: Dornob

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
Dornob is a cross-generational Persian Dastgah collective based in San Diego, California. They play Persian classical, folk, and original music in untraditional ways, using group concepts from jazz. Dornob uses Persian instruments in their music: tar, tombak, ney, daf, santur, and qanun, as well as fretless bass guitar and Persian-tuned keyboards to enhance their sound. In addition to friendship, crossing cultural bridges, learning the music, and having fun playing music, their goal is to make Persian music accessible to young and non-Persian audiences. Their name was suggested by member Nima when he and Kamron first started the band in 2000. But it also comes from the Rumi poem: "Language is outside the door. What are you the doorknob for?" Dornob plays regularly at colleges in San Diego county.
