| Talk: The Underground Railroad That Ran Into Mexico On June 19, 1865, Union soldiers arrived in Galveston, Texas and delivered the news that enslaved people were finally free, more than two months after the Civil War had already ended. That day became Juneteenth. But decades before that announcement was ever made, a community of freedom seekers had already crossed the Rio Grande and built a new life in Mexico rather than wait for America to catch up. This Juneteenth, WorldBeat Cultural Center invites you to go deeper into the holiday’s roots. Join Chief Thomi Perryman for a visual presentation that connects the spirit of Juneteenth to one of its most extraordinary living legacies: the Mascogos of Nacimiento de los Negros, an Afro-Mexican community in Coahuila, Mexico that has celebrated Juneteenth for over 150 years and never stopped. They call it Día de los Negros. Every June 19th, the Mascogos gather with music, dance, and la cabalgata, a thundering 20-mile parade of horseback riders that moves through the Mexican landscape as a living declaration: we remember, and we are still here. Who are the Mascogos? Their story begins with the Black Seminoles, a people born from the alliance between freedom-seeking Africans and Native American nations during the Seminole Wars, one of the longest and most fiercely fought conflicts in American history. When Mexico abolished slavery in 1829 under President Vicente Guerrero (himself a man of African descent), the Rio Grande became a river of liberation. Thousands crossed south, not north, choosing freedom on their own terms. Chief Thomi Perryman will trace the visionary leadership of John Horse, known in Mexico as Juan Caballo, who guided Black Seminoles and Native Americans out of Indian Territory in present day Oklahoma all the way into Mexico, where they planted roots that remain to this day. With only a few hundred Mascogos surviving today, their continued celebration of Juneteenth is not just tradition. It is testimony. This Juneteenth, discover a chapter of the story that has been kept alive south of the border for generations. An expedition in search of the asli-or real Punjabi food-Madhushree Ghosh explores how their food traveled from pre-partition British India to now, while weaving in her own immigrant journey as a graduate student to America in 1993, her quest to find home through the food of her Bengali refugee parents, and the physical journey she embarked on to visit the Punjabi communities in California, Arizona, and New Mexico. | 5:00 PM | Food: Chinese Pulled Noodles In this hands-on class, students will learn the art of traditional Chinese pulled noodles (lā miàn) alongside the preparation of a versatile “mother sauce” that forms the backbone of countless noodle dishes. Participants will explore dough development, gluten structure, and the rhythmic pulling technique that transforms a simple mixture of flour, water, and salt into long, elastic strands of noodles. The class culminates in assembling a complete dish, pairing freshly pulled noodles with a deeply flavored, adaptable sauce. Chinese pulled noodles trace their origins back over 4,000 years, with early evidence found during the Han Dynasty. Lā miàn, meaning “pulled noodles,” became especially prominent in Northern China, where wheat-based foods dominate. Over time, noodle-making evolved into both a culinary craft and a performance art, with skilled chefs stretching dough into hundreds of strands in a matter of seconds. The concept of a “mother sauce” reflects a broader Chinese cooking philosophy: mastering foundational sauces allows for endless variation across regional cuisines.

Lisa See is the New York Times bestselling author of Lady Tan's Circle of Women, The Island of Sea Women, The Tea Girl of Hummingbird Lane, Snow Flower and the Secret Fan, Peony in Love, Shanghai Girls, China Dolls, and Dreams of Joy, which debuted at #1. She is also the author of On Gold Mountain, which tells the story of her Chinese American family's settlement in Los Angeles. See was the recipient of the Golden Spike Award from the Chinese Historical Association of Southern California and the Historymaker's Award from the Chinese American Museum. She was also named National Woman of the Year by the Organization of Chinese American Women. In 1870, three Chinese women arrive in the small, dusty, and violent pueblo of Los Angeles. Dove, the bound-footed daughter of an imperial scholar, is entrancing and innocent. These characteristics should bring her great rewards, beginning with her arranged marriage to a much older merchant. Petal, the big-footed daughter of peasants, has grown up hungry and with dirt between her toes. In a moment of desperation, Petal's father sells her to buy money for rice seed, and she is loaded onto a ship to the Gold Mountain—America—where she is once again sold. Moon is married to a doctor of traditional Chinese medicine. She is educated, speaks fluent English, and has been endowed with a face of great beauty, yet her failed footbinding as a child has left her with a limp that lessens her value in the eyes of many. Each woman has her own desires. Dove wants to love and be loved, Petal desires freedom, and Moon seeks justice. Together they face a larger society that wishes them not one ounce of good will. Anti-Chinese sentiment is strong in Los Angeles, and this eventually leads to the Night of Horrors during which all three women are challenged in ways they could not have imagined. Brought together by hardship and heartbreak, they must use their bravery, endurance, and ability to "eat bitterness" to discover their voices, find freedom, and connect through solace and friendship. Together they are daughters of the sun and moon.

| House of USA Lawn Program The annual lawn program is always held on the Fourth of July or the nearest Sunday to the holiday. The entertainment for this program consists, but not limited to, American traditional folk, country, rock-n-roll, jazz music, patriotic songs, and reading of poems by American authors. The program is held on the HPR International Cottages Stage. Any costumes worn as Uncle Sam colonial men or women, American Revolutionary War soldiers, the west frontier’s cowboys or cowgirls and/or any American historic figures amuse and entertain the audience.
