Women's Film Festival Screening: Sisters of Selma

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
As part of the San Diego Women's Film Festival presented by the Women's Museum of California, the film Sisters of Selma by Jayasri Hart will be screened.

The film documents the story of when Reverend Martin Luther King asked American clergy to protest the violent suppression of Black voters in Selma, Alabama, during the bloody marches of 1965, Catholic sisters responded. Nine African American and white Catholic nuns defied church leadership and took their message to the streets of Selma. In 2003 director Jayasri Hart reunited the nuns who visited Selma in 1965, and the group gathered to watch footage of themselves and the event.

The film tells the amazing story of faith and unprecedented political action through historical footage and interviews. Selma protestors, both Catholic and Protestant, offer their views on the nuns? contributions to history.

After the screening, there will be a discussion panel including director Jayasri Hart with Therese Stawowy and Christine Nava, co-members of the Sisters of Loretto, who were among the first six nuns to march in 1965.
