Talk: Reverse Engineering Censorship in China

Uncategorized Download To My Calendar
The Chinese government's censorship program constitutes one of the most extensive efforts to selectively censor human communication in recorded history. In this talk, Roberts and Gupta will provide an overview of current and past projects on censorship, including a data science approach to measuring censorship in China.

They examine the Chinese censorship system through an observational study wherein social media posts are downloaded before they are censored. They then conduct a large-scale randomized study to detect which types of posts are censored. Finally, they ?reverse-engineer? Chinese newspaper propaganda by detecting unusual coordination among Chinese newspapers.

Results from the project demonstrate that criticism of the state, its leaders and their policies are routinely published, whereas posts with collective action potential are much more likely to be censored. Roberts and Gupta are also able to clarify the internal mechanisms of the Chinese censorship apparatus and to show that propaganda strategies often are used for the purposes of censorship rather than persuasion.

A reception will be held following the talk.
