In this exhibit, visitors are able to explore the representations of daily life and spiritual beliefs from one of the glorious ages of Chinese civilization.
The early Ming rulers, after a hard-won conquest, rebuilt government and resettled people in their farming villages after the disruptions of the mid-14th century caused by civil war and plague.
On that foundation, the thriving commercial economy recovered and enabled both the dynasty and elite families to sponsor new developments in poetry, pottery, painting, calligraphy, textile manufacture, and other cultural achievements.
Ming people held a wide variety of beliefs about the afterlife, and they filled tombs with ceramic models of the things they needed and enjoyed in life: food, furniture, domestic animals, musical instruments, and servants, guardsmen, and entertainers.
