Like the 1970s-80s Taiwanese pop idol Feng Fei-fei, 38-year-old Xia Fei Fei is best known for her wide-brimmed hats. Unlike her namesake though, the Singaporean Fei Fei is a despondent parking lot attendant, waiting to issue tickets. But while that hat is now used to block the sun while she waits by cars, the hat is also a reminder to her friends and her aging father that this Fei Fei once had pop star dreams of her own ? aspirations that rise again with the sudden arrival of an old stage partner and the opportunity afforded by a nationwide TV singing competition.
For years now, Royston Tan (881, 12 Lotus) has provided Singapore?s cinematic pulse for old ballads and the passions they stoke. Playing both to kitsch and to an earnest belief that songs can bring nations and generations together, Tan devises an effervescent and over-the-top musical playground with garish costumes, language jokes, and songs that best stir the heart when crackling out of an old radio or sung nostalgically by a loved one who knows no other way to express what she feels. ?Brian Hu
