Human trafficking and sex trafficking are serious international crimes that also exist in the United States. Sex trafficking involves the harboring and transporting of women and children within and across borders by force, fraud and coercion in order to force them with violence into brothels for the purpose of engaging in forced labor and forced prostitution. These women and children are not paid for their sex work because they are forced to pay back a debt that they never wanted to incur. This is called ?debt bondage.? Dr. Susan Tiefenbrun has been researching and writing about sex trafficking for more than ten years. This presentation will discuss in detail the causes, effects, laws governing, and possible solutions of sex trafficking.
Professor Susan Tiefenbrun received her J.D. from New York University Law School, a Ph.D. with distinction from Columbia University, and an M.A. and B.S. from the University of Wisconsin. Professor Tiefenbrun is a Professor of Law, the Director of the Center of Global Legal Studies, and the founding Director of the Thomas Jefferson School of Law LL.M. Programs in International Trade and Investment and American Legal Studies for foreign lawyers. She has written and edited numerous books and articles on international intellectual property piracy, the World Court, international human rights laws, law and literature, legal ethics, war crimes, human trafficking, and child soldiers. She is President of the Law & Humanities Institute, West Coast Branch.
