As the war with the Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) continues, the Kurdistan Regional Government (KRG) in Iraq remains a critical partner for the United States and the Coalition. Its Peshmerga soldiers, in coordination with international partners, have cleared terrorists from thousands of square miles of territory and laid the groundwork for the ongoing liberation of Mosul, Iraq?s second largest city.
The KRG?s Representative in Washington, D.C., Bayan Sami Abdul Rahman, will discuss the KRG?s role in the ongoing war with ISIS, the status of the humanitarian crisis, and the future of governance and security in the Middle East and, specifically, the parts of the region inhabited by Kurds.
The Kurdistan Region of Iraq has remained a safe haven for religious and ethnic minorities escaping genocide, protecting hundreds of thousands of Yezidis, Christians, Shabak, Kakai and other groups, as well as Sunni and Shi?a Arabs. All told, more than 1.8 million of them have found refuge in Kurdistan, where one in four people are now displaced Syrians or Iraqis.
