The Center for World Music is proud to present its Outdoor Summer Series. Please join us for three unique concerts featuring music from around the world. The series kicks off with Natashia Kozali performing folk songs and telling folktales from around the Caribbean on June 3. Then the series take a sonic journey to Japan with a performance by koto zither player Kyoko Takeda and shakuhachi flute player Jonathan Crick on June 10th. The CWM Summer Series concludes on June 17th in celebration of World Make Music Day (F?te de la Musique) with an outdoor concert at Balboa Park with San Diego-based Choro Sotaque playing vintage Brazilian jazz.
For the 2nd concert in the Outdoor Summer Series, enjoy the calming melodic performance of Japanese traditional music with koto player Kyoko Takeda and shakuhachi player Jonathan Crick, two members of Blue Kanon. These musicians regularly play at the Japanese Friendship Garden in Balboa Park and contribute greatly to the cross-cultural experience of San Diegans, young and old through enlightening performances all over the county.
Blue Kanon is a Japanese music ensemble, performing traditional and contemporary music on the Japanese koto (harp) and shakuhachi (flute). The group was formed in 2006, and since then has played for many cultural events in and around San Diego. The Japanese characters for Blue Kanon (舞流華音) translate as ?dancing, flowing, brilliant sound.? In English, the name suggests the wonderful blue sky and ocean that we enjoy here in San Diego.
Kyoko Takeda was born in Tokyo, Japan and worked professionally as an engineer. She started studying Koto in 1982. Kyoko began performing publicly in 2000. She has been studying under the tutelage of the famous koto player/composer Toshihiko Mizuno since 2004.
Jonathan Crick studied clarinet with Charles Freebern, Don Baird and Daniel Magnusson. He holds bachelors and masters degrees in music from SDSU and was given the Outstanding Music Major and Outstanding Orchestra Member awards in his senior year. Since 1965 he has performed with numerous ensembles in San Diego, and has performed solo works in Matsumoto and Kyoto, Japan; Galway, Ireland; and Borlange, Sweden.
