In light of the Mexican political parties? decision to consolidate the electoral calendar, Mexicans will head to the polls on July 1 to elect 629 federal officials: the president, 500 representatives, and 128 senators. Close to 2,800 local officials?including nine governors?will be elected as well.
Moreover, given the recent changes in the U.S.-Mexico binational relationship under President Trump, many new uncertainties have emerged. Will there be cooperation on issues such as immigration, trade, and border security? Will the new Mexican administration continue to support policies that further U.S. interests?
CGT Pacific Leadership Fellow and Harvard University Professor Jorge Dominguez will discuss these questions, addressing the issues surrounding the extraordinary number of offices on this year?s ballot and how the coming elections will be unique due to a number of unprecedented factors: independent candidates, Mexicans voting abroad, and reelection.
