Halima Hagi-Mohamed was born in Nairobi, Kenya, to Somali parents. She was raised in Fresno, California and is the second-youngest of nine children. Hagi-Mohamed has been writing since the age of twelve, and began her career by writing on the popular story-sharing website, "Wattpad." She later ventured into writing fictional stories about life in the Somali diaspora. In 2010 she won the online Pen Writing Competition, placing first in her division.
"Amilah" is her first book. In Arabic, the word ?Amilah? translates to "the act of being hopeful." In dark times, we find ease in giving up and giving into our gloom and despair; but despite these dark times, we do find glimmers of hope. These glimmers are what inspired Halima to write this book of short stories which explores difficult situations in the lives of various Somali Americans.
