Through her words and actions, the documentary highlights her passion for championing freedom, equality, and human rights, particularly in inspiring younger generations to embrace these values. Drawing on textile traditions rooted in women’s domestic and communal practices, the works approach stitching, weaving, and dyeing as forms of mark making—methods of carrying ancestral stories across borders and generations. In M(other) Tongues, cloth becomes both archive and language, expressing the tensions of uprooting and the desire to remain connected to one’s past. Each piece invites viewers to reflect on how identity is continually woven from personal narratives, shared histories, and the ongoing work of becoming.

| 4:00 PM | Talk: Up the Borysthenes This talk focuses on coins and on lands, specifically the territory of modern Ukraine. Of particular interest are classical and hellenistic Greek coins moving across this region, especially in context of commerce between the Mediterranean and Pontic world of the Greeks and the Scythian world of the interior, north of the Black Sea. What do these coins tell us about life in antiquity or about the activities of states? What do they tell us about modernity, both vis-a-vis commerce (and sometimes crime) but also national heritage and preservation? Methodologically, I deal with the role of data and large-scale analysis in making this story graspable: What role does changing technology play in reconstructing this world?

| 4:00 PM | The Struggle for Hong Kong: A Decolonization Lens This talk offers a new interpretation of popular protests in Hong Kong since 1997, when Britain handed its sovereignty over the territory to China. While most academic and journalistic accounts call these movements for democracy and freedom, Lee argues that the totality of people’s demands and aspirations over two decades actually amounted to a decolonization struggle against the legacies and realities of British and Chinese colonialisms. A central question this talk addresses is: How and why did ordinary citizens transform themselves from complacent colonized subjects to rebellious agents of history?

When her father is unjustly imprisoned, Alouette's efforts to save him lead to her own confinement in the notorious Salpêtrière asylum, where thousands of women are held captive and cruelly treated. But within its grim walls, she discovers a small group of brave allies, and the possibility of a life bigger than she ever imagined. 1939: Kristof Larson is a medical student beginning his psychiatric residency in Paris, whose neighbors on the Rue de Gobelins are a Jewish family who have fled Poland. When Nazi forces descend on the city, Kristof becomes their only hope for survival, even as his work as a doctor is jeopardized. A spellbinding and transportive look at a side of Paris known to very few—the underground city that is a mirror reflection of the glories above—Paula McLain's unforgettable new novel chronicles two parallel journeys of defiance and rescue that connect in ways both surprising and deeply moving.
